Ingrown toenail is diagnosed when the nail develops outside the nail bed and penetrates through the lateral edge into the surrounding skin and tissues, often accompanied by pain, inflammation and disruption of daily activities.
Ingrown toenails are most common on toes and are frequently favored by the following factors:
The surgical nail avulsion procedure can be partial or total.
This treatment is performed under local anesthesia with injectable local anesthetic, so that painful discomfort is minimal. The ingrown nail blade is removed, either partially or completely, depending on the situation, and the exposed nail bed can be cauterized, resulting in a high percentage of healing and no recurrence.
After the procedure, a strict local cleansing and dressing for a few days is indicated, as well as limiting pressure-bearing activities on the treated leg for the next few days.
