Molluscum contagiosum is an extremely common viral infection, especially among children. The virus is highly contagious and is transmitted by direct contact, with tropism for the epidermis.
Children are more prone than adults, with peak incidence between 3 and 10 years of age.
Clinically this pathology is easily recognizable, the appearance of the skin lesions is typical, with small papules of tegument color or pink, clustered and with a central depression.
Frequently, the localization of molluscum lesions is found in the axillary, groin and cervical region, the lesions may also extend to areas of atopic dermatitis.
The treatment of choice for removing lesions is shave excision.
The therapeutic procedure is carried out on a previously anesthetized integument, either with an anesthetic cream or with injectable local anesthetic, in order to minimize discomfort. The curette used excises the lesions at their base and healing is rapid and without visible scarring.
After surgery, a sterile dressing is applied to the treated area, which can be removed after 48 hours. It is advisable to avoid contact with UV radiation in the treated area until it is completely healed to reduce the risk of pigmentation spots.
